रुरुर् उवाच
मम प्राणसमा भार्या दष्टासीद् भुजगेन ह ॥
तत्र मे समयो घोर आत्मनोरग वै कृतः ॥
हन्यां सदैव भुजगं यं यं पश्येयम् इत्य् उत ॥
ततो ऽहं त्वां जिघांसामि जीवितेन विमोक्ष्यसे ॥
डुण्डुभ उवाच
अन्ये ते भुजगा विप्र ये दशन्तीह मानवान् ॥
डुण्डुभान् अहिगन्धेन न त्वं हिंसितुम् अर्हसि ॥
एकानर्थान् पृथगर्थान् एकदुःखान् पृथक्सुखान् ॥
डुण्डुभान् धर्मविद् भूत्वा न त्वं हिंसितुम् अर्हसि ॥

ḍuṇḍubhān dharmavid bhūtvā na tvaṃ hiṃsitum arhasi ||

अन्ये ते भुजगाः ये दशन्ति मानवान्anye te bhujagāḥ ye daśanti mānavāndifferent are those serpents that bite people
डुण्डुभान् अहि-गन्धेन न त्वं हिंसितुम् अर्हसिḍuṇḍubhān ahi-gandhena na tvaṃ hiṃsitum arhasiharmless snakes (ḍuṇḍubhas), resembling serpents only in their smell, you must not destroy
एक-अनर्थान् पृथग्-अर्थान् एक-दुःखान् पृथक्-सुखान्eka-anarthān pṛthag-arthān eka-duḥkhān pṛthak-sukhān[with venomous serpents] they share misfortunes but have different aims; common sorrow, but different joys
धर्म-वित् भूत्वा न त्वं हिंसितुम् अर्हसिdharma-vit bhūtvā na tvaṃ hiṃsitum arhasibeing a knower of dharma, you must not destroy [them]

अनुवाद

Ruru said: "My wife, dear to me as life itself, was bitten by a serpent; then, O serpent, I made a terrible vow to myself: 'I will always kill every serpent I see.' Therefore I wish to kill you -- you shall part with your life." The ḍuṇḍubha said: "Different, O brahmin, are those serpents that bite people here; but the ḍuṇḍubhas, who resemble serpents only in their smell, you must not destroy. Though they share misfortunes with the venomous serpents, their aims are different; their sorrow is common, but their joys differ. Being a knower of dharma, you must not destroy the ḍuṇḍubhas."
