The close of the chapter shows the fullness of duty fulfilled and the triumph of compassion. Jaratkaru, having carried out his forefathers' command, is freed from his debt to them and ascends to heaven together with them -- a visible fruit of dharma: one who fulfills his duty saves both himself and those bound to him. But the summit is his son Astika, who is "equal toward the whole world" and "removes fear": he saves a doomed race of snakes from destruction. Here the highest ideal is revealed -- a compassion surpassing enmity and retribution. Though the snakes were under a curse, and many of them impious, Astika saves them, for the true devotee is a friend to all beings (suhrit sarva-bhutanam). Three debts of a human being are also named, from which Astika and his father were freed: the debt to the gods (sacrifice), to the sages (study of the Vedas and chastity), and to the forefathers (progeny). In Astika one sees the prototype of an intercessor whose mercy and spiritual power turn aside destruction, and in the fulfilling of the three debts, the steps that purify the soul and lead to the highest. Thus the tale affirms: mercy stands above vengeance, and a duty fulfilled opens the way to heaven.
