'While the dark and terrible battle was thus raging, the two gods — Nara and Narayana — themselves entered the fray. There, seeing Nara's divine bow, the lord Vishnu called to mind the discus — the slayer of danavas. And the very moment he thought of it, from the heavens there appeared the greatly radiant discus, scorching to enemies — equal in brilliance to fire, with a flawless rim, [named] Sudarshana: terrible, invincible, supreme. When it appeared, blazing like fire, fearsome, Achyuta (the Unfallen, Krishna-Vishnu), with an arm like an elephant's trunk, swiftly hurled it — the greatly radiant destroyer of enemy strongholds — [rushing] with tremendous speed. Radiant like the flame at the end [of the world], hurled by the hand of the best of men, it fell again and again with great swiftness [into the mass of foes], rending the sons of Diti and Danu by the thousands. Burning like fire, with a licking [flame] it cut down those hosts of asuras; leaping into the sky and [falling] to the ground, it drank blood in the battle like a pishacha (a blood-drinking demon). But the asuras, undaunted, again and again harassed the gods with mountains and, mighty as they were, soared into the sky by the thousands. From the sky there hurtled down terrifying, enormous mountains, [covered] with trees, of many kinds, resembling clouds; and the earth with its forests shook, struck on every side by the fall of huge mountains.'
