अनुवाद

Suta said: “Addressed thus by the serpents, Garuda then said to his mother: “I am setting out to fetch the amrita; I wish to know what I should eat [on the way].” Vinata said: “In a secluded bay of the ocean lies a great settlement of the Nishadas (fishermen). Having eaten those many thousands of them, fetch the amrita. But never, under any circumstance, let the thought of killing a brahmin arise in you: a brahmin cannot be slain by any being, for he is like fire. An angered brahmin becomes fire, the sun, poison, a weapon; a brahmin is the first among those who partake of the sacrifice, the highest of the estates, a father and a teacher.” Garuda said: “How shall I recognize a brahmin by his auspicious marks? Tell me this, mother, since I ask it.” Vinata said: “The one who, having entered your throat like a swallowed fish-hook, burns you, O son, like a live coal — know him as a bull among brahmins.” Suta said: “And Vinata, though she knew her son’s incomparable might, out of a mother’s love spoke to him this word of blessing: “May the Wind (Maruta) guard your wings, the Moon your back, Fire your head, and the Sun your whole body, my little son. And I myself shall ever dwell in prayer for your peace and welfare, O son; go by a safe path, my child, that your task may succeed.””
