Vinata’s instruction to her son carries a double lesson. The first concerns the inviolability of the brahmin: even as Garuda sets out on a fearsome feat where he is permitted to destroy the Nishadas for food, he is sternly warned never to harm a brahmin, for a brahmin is “like fire” and “cannot be slain by any being.” Scripture here affirms the highest reverence owed to the bearers of spiritual knowledge: they are the fathers and teachers of society, and to offend them is ruinous. Even within permitted violence there stands an unbreakable boundary — the sanctity of the brahmin. The second lesson lies in a mother’s love and prayer: knowing her son’s might, Vinata still blesses each part of his body as a mother would, entrusting him to the protection of the gods. Here is shown the power of a loving heart’s blessing and prayer, which accompanies the devoted one in his daring undertaking. And the very sign of a brahmin — that he “burns like a coal” in the throat — means that the spiritual strength of a brahmin is unbearable to whoever would assail it: purity defends itself. Thus Garuda’s feat is from the very outset bounded by dharma and consecrated by blessing.
