Kashyapa said: "There once was a great sage named Vibhavasu, exceedingly wrathful; and he had a younger brother, Supratika, a great ascetic. This great silent one did not wish to hold property in common with his brother, and constantly urged a division. Then Vibhavasu's brother said to him: 'Many, out of delusion, always wish for division; but once divided, blinded by wealth, they no longer honor one another. Then, learning of those who are divided, deluded, and set apart with their own wealth, enemies in the guise of friends set them against each other; and learning of those who have quarreled, other enemies fall upon them — and ruin beyond measure swiftly overtakes the divided. Therefore the wise do not praise division among those bound by a common guru and common scripture, who would otherwise come to suspect one another. You cannot be restrained — you seek your share of wealth through discord; therefore, Supratika, you shall attain the state of an elephant.' Thus cursed, Supratika said to Vibhavasu: 'And you shall become a tortoise, dwelling in the water.' So, by mutual curse, for the sake of wealth, both, deluded, took on the form of an elephant and a tortoise. Fallen into an animal womb through the evil of wrath, hostile to one another, proud of their size and strength, in this lake dwell these two huge-bodied beings, driven by their former enmity. Now one of them — a splendid, immense elephant — approaches; at the sound of his trumpeting the tortoise too, lying beneath the water, rises and shakes the whole lake, and comes forth to battle. The elephant is six yojanas in height and twice that in length, while the tortoise is three yojanas in height and ten yojanas in girth. These two, maddened with battle, each eager to conquer the other — devour them quickly, and accomplish this task you desire."
