याः काश् चिज् जीवता शक्याः कर्तुम् अभ्युदयक्रियाः ॥
ताः सर्वाः समतिक्रम्य निमेषादिष्व् अवस्थितः ॥
तासु सर्वास्व् अवस्थासु त्यक्तसर्वेन्द्रियक्रियः ॥
संपरित्यक्तधर्मात्मा सुनिर्णिक्तात्मकल्मषः ॥
निर्मुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यो व्यतीतः सर्ववागुराः ॥
न वशे कस्य चित् तिष्ठन् सधर्मा मातरिश्वनः ॥

अनुवाद

"Whatever rites for prosperity a living being might be able to perform -- having passed beyond all of them, abiding only in the passing moments; in all states, having abandoned all activity of the senses, one who has renounced external ritual dharma, whose soul's impurity has been thoroughly washed clean; freed from all sins, having passed beyond all snares, standing in no one's power -- of a nature like the wind."

भाष्य

Here the image of the muni reaches its summit -- a freedom like that of the wind. Telling is the comparison "like the wind (Matarishvan)": as the wind is held by nothing, subject to no one, and stained nowhere, so too is the liberated soul free from bonds, powers, and impurity. Telling too is the abandonment of even good rites "for prosperity": the muni has surpassed even the striving for heavenly rewards, seeking not elevation but liberation. This is a lofty step: detachment from the fruits of every action, the very nishkama-karma that crowns the path of karma-yoga. Telling is "whose soul's impurity has been thoroughly washed clean": outer freedom is fruitless without inner purity. Thus scripture reveals the fullness of the ideal of renunciation; and yet this freedom is but the threshold of something higher, for one truly "stands in no one's power" only who has wholly surrendered himself to the power of the Lord, and that sweet dependence is the highest freedom.
