इत्य् उक्ताहं तदा तेन पितृवेश्मनि भारत ॥

अद्यैव त्वं वरारोहे प्रयतस्व यथाविधि ॥
धर्मम् आवाहय शुभे स हि देवेषु पुण्यभाक् ॥
अधर्मेण न नो धर्मः संयुज्येत कथं चन ॥
लोकश् चायं वरारोहे धर्मो ऽयम् इति मंस्यते ॥
धार्मिकश् च कुरूणां स भविष्यति न संशयः ॥
दत्तस्यापि च धर्मेण नाधर्मे रंस्यते मनः ॥
तस्माद् धर्मं पुरस्कृत्य नियता त्वं शुचिस्मिते ॥
उपचाराभिचाराभ्यां धर्मम् आराधयस्व वै ॥

dhārmikaś ca kurūṇāṃ sa bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ||
dattasyāpi ca dharmeṇa nādharme raṃsyate manaḥ ||
tasmād dharmaṃ puraskṛtya niyatā tvaṃ śucismite ||
upacārābhicārābhyāṃ dharmam ārādhayasva vai ||
"Thus was I told then by him in my father's house, O Bharata; that word is true, and now its time has come. With your permission I would summon a god, O king, with that mantra, O royal sage, so that we might have offspring. Which god should I summon? Tell me, O best of the knowers of truth; know that I await your permission, ready for this task." Pandu said: "This very day, O fair-hipped one, make effort as is prescribed by rite; summon Dharma, O gracious one, for among the gods he partakes of righteousness. Let our dharma in no way be joined with unrighteousness; and this world will deem it: 'this is dharma.' And he will become a righteous man among the Kurus, there is no doubt; and the mind of the one given by Dharma will not delight in unrighteousness. Therefore, setting Dharma first, focused, you, O bright-smiling one, worship Dharma with the rite of service and the invoking spell."

Here Pandu chooses the god Dharma for the first conception — and this choice carries deep meaning. His reasoning is telling: the firstborn, begotten of Dharma himself, will be righteousness embodied, and "his mind will not delight in unrighteousness." Thus Yudhishthira will be born — the king of dharma, whose truthfulness will become the axis of the whole epic. Telling, too, is Pandu's concern that "dharma not be joined with unrighteousness" and that the world recognize the birth as righteous: he cares not only for offspring but for its purity and good repute. Here is wisdom: as is the one summoned, so is the child — and so for the head of the line the god of Righteousness itself is chosen. Telling as well is the accord of the spouses, acting in full agreement and by proper rite. Thus scripture leads toward the wondrous birth of the first of the Pandavas — Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, in whom righteousness will be embodied, leading the line to triumph.
