वेश्मन्य् एवं कृते तत्र कृत्वा तान् परमार्चितान् ॥
वासयेः पाण्डवेयांश् च कुन्तीं च ससुहृज्जनाम् ॥
तत्रासनानि मुख्यानि यानानि शयनानि च ॥
विधातव्यानि पाण्डूनां यथा तुष्येत मे पिता ॥
यथा रमेरन् विश्रब्धा नगरे वारणावते ॥
तथा सर्वं विधातव्यं यावत् कालस्य पर्ययः ॥

vidhātavyāni pāṇḍūnāṃ yathā tuṣyeta me pitā ||
yathā rameran viśrabdhā nagare vāraṇāvate ||
tathā sarvaṃ vidhātavyaṃ yāvat kālasya paryayaḥ ||
"When the house has been so prepared, and the Pandavas shown the highest honor, settle them and Kunti there, together with their friends; the finest seats, carriages, and beds must be provided for the Pandavas, so that my father will be pleased and so that they, trusting, may enjoy themselves in the city of Varanavata. So must everything be arranged, until the appointed time comes."

Here treachery reaches a vile refinement: the victims must be surrounded with honor, the better to lull them to sleep. It is telling that luxury and care serve not their good but their deception: the seats, the beds, the carriages are bait that makes the trap invisible. In this lies the utmost hypocrisy of evil — it caresses the doomed so that they will not flee. Telling too is the phrase "so that my father will be pleased": Duryodhana carries out his crime with an eye to his indulgent father, and Dhritarashtra's complicity hangs over the whole affair. Thus scripture shows that nothing is more dangerous than evil dressed as hospitality; and the trust of the righteous, so defenseless before such treachery, will be saved only by Vidura's vigilance and by providence.
