अर्जुन उवाच
किम् अनेन चिरं भीम जीवता पापरक्षसा ॥
गन्तव्यं न चिरं स्थातुम् इह शक्यम् अरिंदम ॥
पुरा संरज्यते प्राची पुरा संध्या प्रवर्तते ॥
रौद्रे मुहूर्ते रक्षांसि प्रबलानि भवन्ति च ॥
त्वरस्व भीम मा क्रीड जहि रक्षो विभीषणम् ॥
पुरा विकुरुते मायां भुजयोः सारम् अर्पय ॥
arjuna uvāca
kim anena ciraṃ bhīma jīvatā pāparakṣasā ||
gantavyaṃ na ciraṃ sthātum iha śakyam ariṃdama ||
purā saṃrajyate prācī purā saṃdhyā pravartate ||
raudre muhūrte rakṣāṃsi prabalāni bhavanti ca ||
tvarasva bhīma mā krīḍa jahi rakṣo vibhīṣaṇam ||
purā vikurute māyāṃ bhujayoḥ sāram arpaya ||
Arjuna said: "What need, Bhima, for this sinful rakshasa to live any longer? We must go on; we cannot stay here long, O tamer of foes. Before the east reddens and twilight sets in — in that fearsome hour the rakshasas grow strong. Make haste, Bhima, do not toy with him; slay the fearsome rakshasa, and before he conjures illusion, put forth the full strength of your arms."

Here Arjuna shows the good sense that completes Bhima's might. His awareness of timing is telling: in the twilight, the "fearsome hour," the strength of rakshasas grows — the wise warrior reckons with the moment and grants the enemy no advantage. Valor without judgment is incomplete: Bhima toys with the enemy, while Arjuna reminds him of measure and of the danger of illusion. Telling too is the phrase "do not toy": even strength drawn out too long in delay can turn into disaster. The verse shows in the brothers two gifts working together — unconquerable might and sober calculation; and their concord is the pledge of victory.
