देवनागरी
ततः शाकलम् अभ्येत्य मद्राणां पुटभेदनम् ॥
मातुलं प्रीतिपूर्वेण शल्यं चक्रे वशे बली ॥
स तस्मिन् सत्कृतो राज्ञा सत्कारार्हो विशां पते ॥
रत्नानि भूरीण्य् आदाय संप्रतस्थे युधां पतिः ॥

अनुवाद
Then, arriving at Shakala, the capital of the Madras, the mighty one lovingly subdued his maternal uncle Shalya. And he, honored by that king and himself deserving of honor, O lord of the people, having taken abundant jewels, set out, the lord of battles.

Shalya — the maternal uncle of Nakula and Sahadeva — is subdued "with love," and the meeting is mutually reverent. It is telling that here too kinship is not sacrificed to the cause of kingship, but is folded into it with tenderness. Yet, remembering that this same Shalya will later be drawn by deceit into the enemy's camp and fall at Kurukshetra, the reader sees how fragile are alliances held together by affection, and how powerfully time parts those who love one another now. The verse teaches to cherish concord while it lasts, and not to take it as eternal: the harmony of kin is a gift of the hour, preserved only by fidelity to dharma.
