"Weapons must not be brought down upon women, upon cows, upon brahmins, upon one whose food one eats, or upon one who has come for refuge. So the good, the virtuous, the righteous, always instruct; O Bhishma, in the world all this proves false in you. Keshava — as elder in knowledge, elder in years, and greater — you proclaim to me, praising him, as if I did not know, O best of the Kurus."

Shishupala correctly lists the commandments of the good — to spare women, cows, brahmins, one's provider, and the refugee — yet turns them into an instrument of slander, declaring Bhishma a violator of them all. Telling is the fact that malice can quote dharma: knowledge of the rules is not righteousness, and a mouth spewing slander against the Lord can recite the law flawlessly. The verse teaches that the letter of dharma in the mouth of a slanderer is not sacred; what matters is not what is spoken but from what heart. And whoever turns a commandment of mercy into a spear against the innocent violates its spirit himself, however precisely he may know its words.
