एतत् कृत्यतमं राजन्न् अस्माकं भरतर्षभ ॥
अयं हि शकुनिर् वेद सविद्याम् अक्षसंपदम् ॥
दृढमूला वयं राज्ये मित्राणि परिगृह्य च ॥
सारवद् विपुलं सैन्यं सत्कृत्य च दुरासदम् ॥
ते च त्रयोदशे वर्षे पारयिष्यन्ति चेद् व्रतम् ॥
जेष्यामस् तान् वयं राजन् रोचतां ते परंतप ॥
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
तूर्णं प्रत्यानयस्वैतान् कामं व्यध्वगतान् अपि ॥
आगच्छन्तु पुनर्द्यूतम् इदं कुर्वन्तु पाण्डवाः ॥

dṛḍhamūlā vayaṃ rājye mitrāṇi parigṛhya ca ||

jeṣyāmas tān vayaṃ rājan rocatāṃ te paraṃtapa ||

tūrṇaṃ pratyānayasvaitān kāmaṃ vyadhvagatān api ||
āgacchantu punardyūtam idaṃ kurvantu pāṇḍavāḥ ||
[Duryodhana:] "This is our most essential task, O king, O bull of the Bharatas; for this Shakuni possesses full mastery of the art of dice. We are firmly rooted in the kingdom, having gained allies, and having strengthened our vast, mighty, invincible army. And even if in the thirteenth year they fulfill their vow, we shall overcome them, O king; may this please you, O scourge of foes. Quickly bring them back, even should they have gone far along their way; let them come, and let the Pandavas play this game once more."

The whole calculation rests on deceit: their "most essential task" is not valor but Shakuni's trickery; not the strength of arms but the rigging of dice. Thus impiety, not daring open battle, relies on cunning, and the very word "task" becomes a synonym for fraud. They fortify the throne with allies and an army, preparing for a future war even against the case that their victim survives — evil is provident, but its providence serves only evil. The verse teaches that a scheme resting on deceit is doomed, however firmly established it may seem; that strength and allies placed at the service of wrongdoing only multiply the coming downfall; and that skill put to the service of lies is not valor but an instrument of ruin — above all for the liars themselves.
