When Partha had thus spoken, the glorious son of Madravati, valiant Sahadeva, raising his mighty arm and desiring the slaying of the son of Subala, spoke this word, with eyes reddened by anger, hissing like a serpent: 'Those dice that you take for dice, O fool, thief of the glory of the Gandharas — these are not dice but sharpened arrows, chosen by you for the battle. As Bhima has said, meaning you together with your kin, I shall be the doer of that deed — so prepare yourself in everything. I will swiftly slay you in battle, falling upon you together with your kin, if you stand your ground in battle by the law of the kshatriya, O son of Subala.'

Sahadeva, the gentlest of the brothers, utters a formidable vow — and thereby shows that the measure of indignation in the righteous is determined by the weight of the wrong, not by innate temperament. The image runs deep: the dice with which the deceiver played will, in their hour, turn into arrows — the instrument of fraud becomes the instrument of reckoning, for a man is punished by the very means of his sin. The condition 'if you stand your ground by the law of the kshatriya' is significant: even the avenger calls his enemy to honest battle, not to murder, as the other called him to deceit. The verse teaches that even the mildest of men rises up when what is sacred is profaned; that the instrument of sin turns, in its hour, against the sinner; and that righteous retribution, even in anger, keeps to the law, calling wrongdoing to the open judgment of arms.
