वैशंपायन उवाच
श्रुत्वा च विदुरं प्राप्तं राज्ञा च परिसान्त्वितम् ॥
धृतराष्ट्रात्मजो राजा पर्यतप्यत दुर्मतिः ॥
स सौबलं समानाय्य कर्णदुःशासनाव् अपि ॥
अब्रवीद् वचनं राजा प्रविश्याबुद्धिजं तमः ॥
एष प्रत्यागतो मन्त्री धृतराष्ट्रस्य संमतः ॥
विदुरः पाण्डुपुत्राणां सुहृद् विद्वान् हिते रतः ॥
यावद् अस्य पुनर् बुद्धिं विदुरो नापकर्षति ॥
पाण्डवानयने तावन् मन्त्रयध्वं हितं मम ॥
अथ पश्याम्य् अहं पार्थान् प्राप्तान् इह कथं चन ॥
पुनः शोषं गमिष्यामि निरासुर् निरवग्रहः ॥
विषम् उद्बन्धनं वापि शस्त्रम् अग्निप्रवेशनम् ॥
करिष्ये न हि तान् ऋद्धान् पुनर् द्रष्टुम् इहोत्सहे ॥

yāvad asya punar buddhiṃ viduro nāpakarṣati ||

punaḥ śoṣaṃ gamiṣyāmi nirāsur niravagrahaḥ ||
viṣam udbandhanaṃ vāpi śastram agnipraveśanam ||
kariṣye na hi tān ṛddhān punar draṣṭum ihotsahe ||

पाण्डवानयने तावत्pāṇḍavānayane tāvattoward the return of the Pandavas, until then
मन्त्रयध्वं हितं ममmantrayadhvaṃ hitaṃ mamadiscuss what is beneficial for me
अथ पश्यामि अहं पार्थान्atha paśyāmi ahaṃ pārthānbut if I see the sons of Pritha
प्राप्तान् इह कथं चनprāptān iha kathaṃ canahaving somehow come here
पुनः शोषं गमिष्यामिpunaḥ śoṣaṃ gamiṣyāmiagain I shall wither away
निरासुः निरवग्रहःnirāsuḥ niravagrahaḥwithout strength and without support
विषम् उद्बन्धनं वा अपिviṣam udbandhanaṃ vā apipoison or hanging
शस्त्रम् अग्निप्रवेशनम्śastram agnipraveśanama weapon or entering fire
करिष्ये न हि तान् ऋद्धान्kariṣye na hi tān ṛddhānI shall resort to it, for they are prospering

अनुवाद

Hearing that Vidura had returned and that the king had comforted him, the evil-minded Duryodhana began to torment himself. Summoning the son of Subala, along with Karna and Duhshasana, the king, entering into the darkness born of unwisdom, said: "This minister, beloved of Dhritarashtra, has returned. Vidura is a learned friend of the sons of Pandu, ever wishing them well. Before Vidura can once more turn my father's mind toward the Pandavas' return, deliberate on what is useful to me. If I should somehow see the sons of Pritha come here again and flourishing, I shall wither away, bereft of strength and support. I will take poison, the noose, a weapon, or enter fire — I cannot bear to see them exalted again."
