युधिष्ठिर उवाचyudhiṣṭhira uvācaYudhishthira said
क्रोधः हन्ता मनुष्याणाम् क्रोधः भावयिता पुनः इति विद्धि महाप्राज्ञे क्रोधमूलौ भवाभवौkrodhaḥ hantā manuṣyāṇām krodhaḥ bhāvayitā punaḥ iti viddhi mahāprājñe krodhamūlau bhavābhavauanger is the killer of men, and anger again produces effects; know, O most wise one, that being and non-being are rooted in anger
यः हि संहरते क्रोधम् भावः तस्य सुशोभने यः पुनः पुरुषः क्रोधम् नित्यम् न सहते शुभेyaḥ hi saṃharate krodham bhāvaḥ tasya suśobhane yaḥ punaḥ puruṣaḥ krodham nityam na sahate śubhewhoever restrains anger possesses being, O beautiful one; but the man who constantly cannot withstand anger, O virtuous one
तस्य अभावाय भवति क्रोधः परमदारुणःtasya abhāvāya bhavati krodhaḥ paramadāruṇaḥfor his non-being anger becomes extremely dreadful
क्रोधमूलः विनाशः हि प्रजानाम् इह दृश्यते तत् कथम् मादृशः क्रोधम् उत्सृजेत् लोकनाशनम्krodhamūlaḥ vināśaḥ hi prajānām iha dṛśyate tat katham mādṛśaḥ krodham utsṛjet lokanāśanamit is seen that the destruction of creatures here is rooted in anger; how then shall one like me let loose anger, which destroys the world
क्रुद्धः पापम् नरः कुर्यात् क्रुद्धः हन्यात् गुरून् अपि क्रुद्धः परुषया वाचा श्रेयसः अपि अवमन्यतेkruddhaḥ pāpam naraḥ kuryāt kruddhaḥ hanyāt gurūn api kruddhaḥ paruṣayā vācā śreyasaḥ api avamanyatean angry man may commit sin, an angry man may kill even his elders, an angry man with harsh speech disdains even the worthy
वाच्यावाच्ये हि कुपितः न प्रजानाति कर्हि चित् न अकार्यम् अस्ति क्रुद्धस्य न अवाच्यम् विद्यते तथाvācyāvācye hi kupitaḥ na prajānāti karhi cit na akāryam asti kruddhasya na avācyam vidyate tathāthe enraged person never discerns what should and should not be said; for the angry there is nothing not to be done and nothing not to be said
हिंस्यात् क्रोधात् अवध्यान् च वध्यान् संपूजयेत् अपि आत्मानम् अपि च क्रुद्धः प्रेषयेत् यमसादनम्hiṃsyāt krodhāt avadhyān ca vadhyān saṃpūjayet api ātmānam api ca kruddhaḥ preṣayet yamasādanamout of anger he may slay those who should not be slain and honor those deserving death; the angry man may send even himself to the abode of Yama
एतान् दोषान् प्रपश्यद्भिः जितः क्रोधः मनीषिभिः इच्छद्भिः परमम् श्रेयः इह च अमुत्र च उत्तमम्etān doṣān prapaśyadbhiḥ jitaḥ krodhaḥ manīṣibhiḥ icchadbhiḥ paramam śreyaḥ iha ca amutra ca uttamamseeing these faults, the wise, desiring the highest good here and in the hereafter, have conquered anger
