संधिम् कृत्वा एव कालेन अन्तकेन पतत्रिणा अनन्तेन अप्रमेयेन स्रोतसा सर्वहारिणाsaṃdhim kṛtvā eva kālena antakena patatriṇā anantena aprameyena srotasā sarvahāriṇāhaving made a pact with time — the winged ender, the boundless, immeasurable stream that carries away everything
प्रत्यक्षम् मन्यसे कालम् मर्त्यः सन् कालबन्धनः फेनधर्मा महाराज फलधर्मा तथा एव चpratyakṣam manyase kālam martyaḥ san kālabandhanaḥ phenadharmā mahārāja phaladharmā tathā eva cayou, being mortal and bound by time, consider time to be self-evident; yet you are of the nature of foam, O great king, and of the nature of fruit
निमेषात् अपि कौन्तेय यस्य आयुः अपचीयते सूच्या इव अञ्जनचूर्णस्य किम् इति प्रतिपालयेत्nimeṣāt api kaunteya yasya āyuḥ apacīyate sūcyā iva añjanacūrṇasya kim iti pratipālayetone whose life wanes even in an instant, like the antimony powder on a needle — why should such a one wait, O Kaunteya
यः नूनम् अमितायुः स्यात् अथ वा अपि प्रमाणवित् स कालम् वै प्रतीक्षेत सर्वप्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान्yaḥ nūnam amitāyuḥ syāt atha vā api pramāṇavit sa kālam vai pratīkṣeta sarvapratyakṣadarśivānone who lived forever, or who knew the exact measure of his lifespan, seeing everything directly — such a one could afford to wait for time
प्रतीक्षमाणान् कालः नः समाः राजन् त्रयोदश आयुषः अपचयम् कृत्वा मरणाय उपनेष्यतिpratīkṣamāṇān kālaḥ naḥ samāḥ rājan trayodaśa āyuṣaḥ apacayam kṛtvā maraṇāya upaneṣyatiwhile we wait, time will, over thirteen years, O king, diminish our lives and bring us to death
शरीरिणाम् हि मरणम् शरीरे नित्यम् आश्रितम् प्राक् एव मरणात् तस्मात् राज्याय एव घटामहेśarīriṇām hi maraṇam śarīre nityam āśritam prāk eva maraṇāt tasmāt rājyāya eva ghaṭāmahedeath always dwells within the body of embodied beings; therefore, before death comes, let us strive for the kingdom

यः न यातयते वैरम् अल्पसत्त्वोद्यमः पुमान् अफलम् तस्य जन्म अहम् मन्ये दुर्जातजायिनःyaḥ na yātayate vairam alpasattvodyamaḥ pumān aphalam tasya janma aham manye durjātajāyinaḥone of little fortitude and effort, who does not carry enmity through to its end — the birth of such a wretchedly born man I consider fruitless
हैरण्यौ भवतः बाहू श्रुतिः भवति पार्थिव हत्वा द्विषन्तम् संग्रामे भुक्त्वा बाह्वर्जितम् वसुhairaṇyau bhavataḥ bāhū śrutiḥ bhavati pārthiva hatvā dviṣantam saṃgrāme bhuktvā bāhvarjitam vasuyour arms become golden, so runs the saying, O king, when, having slain the enemy in battle, you enjoy the wealth won by your own arms
