'May that being, because of whose curse the suffering Nishadha endures pain, obtain a suffering even greater than his. May the sinner who did this to sinless Nala attain a life yet more wretched than this.' Thus lamenting, the wife of the great-souled king searched for her husband in the forest full of beasts of prey. The daughter of Bhima, as though maddened, wept again and again, crying: 'O king!' and ran here and there. She was withering away with grief, like a wailing kurari bird, and suddenly, as she wandered nearby, a huge, hungry serpent seized her. Devoured by the serpent and overcome by grief, she grieved not so much for herself as for Nishadha: 'O lord, why do you not run to me here in the forest, as this serpent devours me like one without protector? How will you live, remembering me, when you are freed from evil and regain your mind, your senses and your wealth? Who will dispel your weariness, O tiger among kings, when you are exhausted, hungry and worn out?'

Even facing death, Damayanti thinks of Nala's future awakening. Her curse is aimed not at her husband but at the force that had clouded his mind.
