By order of King Bhāṅgasvari, Bāhuka came to the stable and began to test the horses. Ṛtuparṇa urged him on many times, and Bāhuka chose horses that were lean but fit for the road: full of vigor and fire, of good lineage and temper, free of bad marks, broad-nostriled, with powerful jaws, pure in their ten whorls, born of the Sindhu land, swift as the wind. Seeing them, the king grew somewhat angry: "What is it you mean to do? Are you mocking us? How will these weak horses, with so little breath in them, carry me on so great a journey?" Bāhuka answered: "These horses will reach Vidarbha, there is no doubt of it. If you think otherwise, tell me which ones to harness." Ṛtuparṇa said: "You yourself know the nature of horses and are skilled, Bāhuka; harness whichever ones you judge capable." Then the expert harnessed four good horses to the chariot. The king mounted the chariot in haste, but the finest horses sank down upon their knees. Nala gently calmed those horses, full of vigor and strength, raised them with the reins, seated Vārṣṇeya, and, taking up the highest speed, set out to go. Urged on by Bāhuka according to proper method, the finest horses seemed to leap into the sky, bewildering the charioteer. Seeing them bear him along with the speed of the wind, the wise lord of Ayodhyā was struck with the greatest astonishment.

Nala's mastery sees strength where the outward eye sees weakness. So it is with himself now as well: outwardly Bāhuka, inwardly a king still capable of return.
