बृहदश्व उवाच
दमयन्ती तु तच् छ्रुत्वा भृशं शोकपरायणा ॥
शङ्कमाना नलं तं वै केशिनीम् इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥
गच्छ केशिनि भूयस् त्वं परीक्षां कुरु बाहुके ॥
आब्रुवाणा समीपस्था चरितान्य् अस्य लक्षय ॥
यदा च किं चित् कुर्यात् स कारणं तत्र भामिनि ॥
तत्र संचेष्टमानस्य संलक्ष्यं ते विचेष्टितम् ॥
न चास्य प्रतिबन्धेन देयो ऽग्निर् अपि भामिनि ॥
याचते न जलं देयं सम्यग् अत्वरमाणया ॥
एतत् सर्वं समीक्ष्य त्वं चरितं मे निवेदय ॥
यच् चान्यद् अपि पश्येथास् तच् चाख्येयं त्वया मम ॥
दमयन्त्यैवम् उक्ता सा जगामाथाशु केशिनी ॥
निशाम्य च हयज्ञस्य लिङ्गानि पुनर् आगमत् ॥
सा तत् सर्वं यथावृत्तं दमयन्त्यै न्यवेदयत् ॥
निमित्तं यत् तदा दृष्टं बाहुके दिव्यमानुषम् ॥
bṛhadaśva uvāca
damayantī tu tac chrutvā bhṛśaṃ śokaparāyaṇā ||
śaṅkamānā nalaṃ taṃ vai keśinīm idam abravīt ||
gaccha keśini bhūyas tvaṃ parīkṣāṃ kuru bāhuke ||
ābruvāṇā samīpasthā caritāny asya lakṣaya ||
yadā ca kiṃ cit kuryāt sa kāraṇaṃ tatra bhāmini ||
tatra saṃceṣṭamānasya saṃlakṣyaṃ te viceṣṭitam ||
na cāsya pratibandhena deyo 'gnir api bhāmini ||
yācate na jalaṃ deyaṃ samyag atvaramāṇayā ||
etat sarvaṃ samīkṣya tvaṃ caritaṃ me nivedaya ||
yac cānyad api paśyethās tac cākhyeyaṃ tvayā mama ||
damayantyaivam uktā sā jagāmāthāśu keśinī ||
niśāmya ca hayajñasya liṅgāni punar āgamat ||
sā tat sarvaṃ yathāvṛttaṃ damayantyai nyavedayat ||
nimittaṃ yat tadā dṛṣṭaṃ bāhuke divyamānuṣam ||
Brihadashva said: "Hearing this, Damayanti, sunk in deep grief, suspected more and more that Bahuka was Nala, and said to Keshini: 'Go again and test Bahuka. Without speaking to him openly, stand near and watch his actions. When he does anything, observe every movement. Do not give him fire, even if there is some obstacle to it; if he asks for water, do not give it at once. Report to me everything you see in his conduct, and tell me also whatever else unusual you may observe.' Keshini went, saw the signs of a master of horses, and returned. She reported to Damayanti everything just as it had happened -- the divine and human signs that had been seen in Bahuka."
