Brihadashva said: 'When the city had grown calm and joyful and the great festival had begun, Nala, with a great army, brought Damayanti back. Her father, the mighty Bhima, having honored his daughter, sent her forth. When the princess of Vidarbha arrived with her children, Nala lived with her joyfully, like the king of the gods in Nandana. Becoming renowned once more among the kings of Jambudvipa, the greatly glorious Nala regained his kingdom, dwelt in it, and duly performed various sacrifices with worthy gifts. So too, great king, you will soon live again with your friends. Nala, best of men, together with his wife, fell into such suffering because of gambling; alone he endured great and terrible grief, and rose again to prosperity. But you, O Pandava, find joy in this great forest together with your brothers and with Krishna, ever reflecting on dharma. Great brahmins, knowers of the Veda and Vedangas, sit constantly at your side — so what is there to grieve over?'

The tale of Nala restores a sense of proportion for Yudhishthira: his misfortune is great, but he is not alone. Remembering another's recovery becomes a remedy for despair.
