Pulastya said: "I shall tell you what is the refuge of the sages; listen with a focused mind to the fruit of the tirthas. The fruit of a tirtha is obtained by one whose hands, feet, and mind are well restrained, who possesses knowledge, austerity, and good repute. It is obtained by one who has turned away from accepting gifts, who is content, disciplined, pure, and free from egotism. It is obtained by one who is without blemish, without vain undertakings, who eats little, has mastered the senses, and is free from all faults. It is obtained by one who is free from anger, truthful in conduct, firm in vows, and regards all beings as himself. The sages have set forth the sacrifices in due order in the Vedas, together with their fruits in this world and after death, but a poor man cannot obtain the great sacrifices requiring many accessories. These are attained by kings or by wealthy men on occasion, not by those with insufficient means, lacking companions and resources. Therefore hear of a means attainable even by the poor, equal to the merits and fruits of sacrifices — best of warriors, understand it. This is the supreme secret of the sages, O best of the Bharatas: the merit of visiting the tirthas surpasses even sacrifices. One who has not fasted for three nights, has not visited the tirthas, and has not given gold or cows, is called poor. Even having performed the Agnishtoma and other sacrifices with abundant gifts, a man does not obtain the fruit that visiting the tirthas bestows."

Pulastya begins not with geography but with the pilgrim's inner state. A tirtha purifies not as a magical point on a map, but as the path of a humble, pure, and compassionate person.
