Lomasha said: 'In the line of Ikshvaku was born a king named Sagara, endowed with beauty, fortitude, and strength, mighty, yet childless. He destroyed the Haihayas and the Talajanghas, subdued other kings, and ruled his own kingdom. He had two wives, proud of their beauty and youth: Vaidarbhi, O best of the Bharatas, and Shaibya, O bull among the Bharatas. Desiring sons, the king, together with both wives, gave himself to great austerity, settling on Mount Kailasa. Practicing great austerity joined with yoga, he beheld the great-souled three-eyed destroyer of Tripura: Shankara, Bhava, Ishana, Shulapani, Pinakin, Tryambaka, Shiva, Ugresha, the many-formed Umapati. As soon as he saw the giver of boons, the king, together with his wives, fell before him and asked for sons. Pleased, Hara said to the best of kings and his wives: "At the moment when you asked me for a boon, O lord of men, from one of your wives sixty thousand sons will be born — heroes, proud in battle. But all of them together will perish, O king. From the other will be born a single hero, the continuer of the line." Having said this, Rudra vanished on that very spot.'

Shiva's gift carries both a blessing and a warning at once. Numbers without humility do not save a lineage; its continuation comes through the one who upholds dharma.
