Lomasha said: "Having heard Bhagiratha's word, and wishing to please the dwellers of heaven, the auspicious one answered the king: 'So be it. Mighty-armed one, for your sake, best of kings, I shall hold back the blessed, divine, holy river of the gods as she falls from the sky.' Having said this, the mighty-armed one went to Himavat, surrounded by dreadful attendants brandishing various weapons. Then he said to Bhagiratha, best of men: 'Entreat, mighty-armed one, the river, daughter of the king of mountains. I shall hold back the best of rivers as she falls from Trivishtapa, for the purification of your forefathers.' Hearing this word spoken by Sharva, the king became pure, bowed down, and fixed his mind intently upon Ganga. Then the holy Ganga, lovely in her waters, when the king had thought of her and had seen Ishana standing ready, suddenly fell from the sky. Seeing her fall, the gods together with the great sages, the gandharvas, nagas, and rakshasas gathered, wishing to behold it. Then from the sky fell Ganga, daughter of Himavat, churned with great whirlpools and swarming with fish and sea-monsters. Hara, O king, held back Ganga, the celestial girdle, as she fell upon his forehead, like a garland of pearls."

The descent of Ganga is not chaotic: Shiva receives her, and so a destructive force becomes a purifying stream. Mercy needs a form, lest it destroy the very one it saves.
