After this, mighty Jamadagnya satisfied Indra with a great sacrifice and gave the earth to the priests. To great Kashyapa he also gave a golden vedi, making it ten vyamas long and nine high, lord of men. With Kashyapa's consent, the brahmins then divided it into parts; for this reason they, O king, became known as Khandavayanas. Having given the earth to great Kashyapa, Rama of measureless valor lives here, on the royal mountain Mahendra. Thus his enmity with the kshatriyas dwelling in the world arose, and the earth was conquered by Rama of measureless splendor. Vaishampayana said: "Then, on the fourteenth day, magnanimous Rama, as agreed, showed himself to those brahmins and to Dharmaraja with his younger brothers. The lord-king, together with his brothers, honored him and paid the highest honor to the twice-born. Having honored Jamadagnya and received honor from him, the mighty one spent that night on Mahendra and set out southward."

By giving the earth to Kashyapa, Rama renounces the fruit of his victory. This is a crucial resolution: strength that does not culminate in giving remains mere violence.
