"That long-armed Vrikodara, who could destroy a rich enemy army even without weapons — at the mere sound of his voice, armies release excrement and urine. Wasted by hunger, thirst, travel, cold, wind, and heat, taking up various weapons and arrows in his hands, he, remembering this dreadful forest sojourn, will leave no remnant — of this I am certain. There is no one on earth among men equal to him in prowess and strength; parched by cold, heat, wind, and sun, in battle he will leave none of his foes alive. That mighty Vrikodara, who in the east conquered kings together with their followers on a single chariot, now suffers in the forest, clothed in bark. Behold this Sahadeva, who conquered the assembled southern lords at Dantakura: today he is an ascetic, wearing the guise of an ascetic. That hero Nakula, master of battle, who on a single chariot conquered the western quarter, today lives in the forest on roots and fruits, with matted locks and a body caked in filth. This faithful woman, the daughter who rose from the sacrificial altar at the great king's rich rite, deserving of happiness — how does she now endure this grievous forest dwelling? How do the sons of these gods — the foremost of the triad, Vayu, the lord of the gods, and the Ashvins — live in the forest with so little happiness, though they deserve happiness? If the son of Dharma is defeated, banished together with his wife, brothers, and followers, and Duryodhana grows ever greater, how does the earth with its mountains not sink down?"

In his grief Balarama recalls not the weakness of the Pandavas but their strength. His pain is that these heroes endure willingly, bound by the word of dharma.
