Then Somaka's guru departed to the higher world; after some time had passed, Somaka too departed to the higher state. There he saw that the guru was being boiled in a terrible hell, and asked: 'Why are you being boiled in hell, twice-born one?' The guru, being harshly boiled by the fire, said to him: 'O king, I performed the sacrifice for you; this is the fruit of that act.' Hearing this, the royal seer said to Dharmaraja: 'I will enter here; let my priest be freed. For it is because of me that this great soul is being boiled in the fire of hell.' Dharma said: 'No one else, O king, ever partakes of the fruit of the doer. These fruits, best of givers, are seen to be yours.' Somaka said: 'I do not desire the blessed worlds without this speaker of the Veda. I wish to dwell together with him in the abode of the gods or in hell, Dharmaraja, for by his deed I am equal to him. Let this fruit, good and bad, O god, be shared between us both.' Dharma said: 'If such is your wish, O king, partake of his fruit together with him for an equal time. Afterward you will attain the good path.'

Somaka accepts responsibility late, but clearly. He does not dispute the law of the fruit of action; instead he asks to share the consequences of the decision he himself had sanctioned.
