Then all of them appeared once more, O Yudhishthira. And Yavakri said to the gods, with Agni at their head: "I have studied the Brahman, I have kept the vows. How then could Raibhya kill me in such a manner — me, a student and an ascetic, O best of the immortals?" The gods said: "Do not speak so, Yavakri, as you are speaking, O sage. You studied the Vedas easily before, without a guru. But he, having satisfied his gurus through his own labor amid suffering, attained the highest Brahman over a long time and with great effort." Lomasha said: "Having spoken thus to Yavakri, the gods, together with Agni, having revived them all, went again to Trivishtapa. Here is his holy ashram, where the trees always bear flowers and fruit. Having dwelt here, O tiger among kings, you will be freed from all sins."

The gods give the final verdict: knowledge easily gained is not equal to knowledge won through suffering in service to a guru. The Vedas must enter one's character, or else they do not become a protection.
