Hanuman said: "Since you are curious to know about me, delight of the Pandavas, hear everything in full. I was born in the field of Kesarin, from Vayu, the life of the world, lotus-eyed one; I am a monkey named Hanuman. Sugriva, son of the Sun, and Valin, son of Shakra, were kings of all the monkeys and leaders of all the monkey troops. They, of great might, scourge of foes, were bound to me as well; with Sugriva I had a closeness like that of wind with fire. Then, for some reason, he was wronged by his brother and lived long with me on Rishyamuka. Later the hero, son of Dasharatha, mighty in strength, named Rama, Vishnu in human form, walked upon this earth. Wishing to fulfill his father's will, together with his wife and younger brother, bow in hand, foremost among archers, he dwelt in the Dandaka forest. His wife was forcibly abducted from Janasthana by Ravana, who deceived the wise Raghava by taking the form of a deer. Deprived of his wife, Raghava searched for her together with his brother and saw on a mountain peak Sugriva, the foremost of monkeys. Between him and the great-souled Raghava a friendship arose; having slain Valin, Rama established Sugriva on the throne. He sent forth the monkeys to search for Sita. Then, in the direction in which we set out with tens of millions of monkeys, news of Sita was given by a vulture. For the success of Rama's task, whose deeds are flawless, I suddenly leapt across the ocean, a hundred yojanas wide. The goddess was seen by me in Ravana's dwelling, and I returned, having revealed my name there. Then the hero Rama, having slain all those rakshasas, brought back his wife once more, as one recovers a lost Vedic tradition. When Rama was established on the throne, I asked this hero: 'As long as the story of Rama endures in the worlds, slayer of foes, may I live.' And he said: 'So be it.' For ten thousand years and ten hundred years more Rama ruled the kingdom, and then departed to the Tridiva. Here, my child, the apsaras and gandharvas ever delight me, singing of that hero's deeds. This path, descendant of Kuru, is inaccessible to mortals. Therefore I have blocked this path for you, a path served by the gods, so that none, O Bharata, might insult or curse you. This is the divine road of the gods; humans do not walk here. And the lake for which you have come is quite near."

Hanuman's account binds Bhima to Rama and Vishnu not through a slogan but through a living memory of service. Hanuman's strength has remained in the world because it is bound forever to the name of Rama.
