"Following it came another great being in the form of a Kirata, with bow, arrows, and sword, surrounded by women. Then I took up my bow and my two inexhaustible quivers and struck this hair-raising being with an arrow. At the same instant the Kirata, drawing his bow with great force, struck it even harder, as though shaking my very mind. He said to me: 'King, this is my former quarry. Why have you, abandoning the law of the hunt, struck it?' Then he said: 'Stand firm: with sharp arrows I will crush your pride' — and this great-bodied, huge being rushed at me. I showered him with a great rain of arrows, then struck him with blazing, feathered, consecrated arrows, as though striking a mountain peak with thunderbolts. His form became a hundredfold and then a thousandfold, and I struck all these bodies with arrows. Then they became one body again, and again I shattered it. He became now small with a huge head, now huge with a small head, and again, made one, advanced upon me in battle. When I could not overcome him with arrows, I resorted to the Vayavya weapon, but even with that I could not slay him — it seemed a wonder. When that weapon was repelled, great astonishment seized me. Then, O great king, I showered upon the being an even greater multitude of weapons: arrows like stakes, a net of iron, a rain of arrows in abundance, the mountain weapon, a rain of stones — but he, sinless one, laughing, devoured all my weapons."

The Kirata shatters Arjuna's confidence in his own skill. Before a divine trial, even perfect technique proves insufficient until the warrior learns who stands before him.
