ततो ऽहं स्तूयमानस् तु तत्र तत्र महर्षिभिः ॥
अपश्यम् उदधिं भीमम् अपांपतिम् अथाव्ययम् ॥
फेनवत्यः प्रकीर्णाश् च संहताश् च समुच्छ्रिताः ॥
ऊर्मयश् चात्र दृश्यन्ते चलन्त इव पर्वताः ॥
नावः सहस्रशस् तत्र रत्नपूर्णाः समन्ततः ॥
तिमिंगिलाः कच्छपाश् च तथा तिमितिमिंगिलाः ॥
मकराश् चात्र दृश्यन्ते जले मग्ना इवाद्रयः ॥
शङ्खानां च सहस्राणि मग्नान्य् अप्सु समन्ततः ॥
दृश्यन्ते स्म यथा रात्रौ तारास् तन्व् अभ्रसंवृताः ॥
तथा सहस्रशस् तत्र रत्नसंघाः प्लवन्त्य् उत ॥
वायुश् च घूर्णते भीमस् तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥
तम् अतीत्य महावेगं सर्वाम्भोनिधिम् उत्तमम् ॥
अपश्यं दानवाकीर्णं तद् दैत्यपुरम् अन्तिकात् ॥

tam atītya mahāvegaṃ sarvāmbhonidhim uttamam ||
apaśyaṃ dānavākīrṇaṃ tad daityapuram antikāt ||

अनुवाद

Arjuna said: "Praised along the way by great sages, I saw the fearsome ocean, the eternal lord of waters. Its foaming, scattered and clustered waves rose like moving mountains; everywhere there were thousands of ships full of jewels. In the water could be seen timiṅgilas, tortoises, timitimiṅgilas and makaras, like submerged mountains. Thousands of conches lay in the water on every side, like stars at night faintly veiled by clouds. There floated thousands of heaps of jewels, and a fearsome wind swirled about so that it seemed a marvel. Having crossed this vast, swift, and greatest of all bodies of water, I saw close by the city of the daityas, filled with dānavas."

भाष्य

Before the battle Arjuna passes through the image of a boundless ocean. In this way the narrative expands its scale: this is not an earthly skirmish but an event unfolding at the edge of cosmic forces.
