तस्यां प्रतिहतायां तु दानवा युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥
प्राकुर्वन् विविधा माया यौगपद्येन भारत ॥
ततो वर्षं प्रादुरभूत् सुमहल् लोमहर्षणम् ॥
अस्त्राणां घोररूपाणाम् अग्नेर् वायोस् तथाश्मनाम् ॥
सा तु मायामयी वृष्टिः पीडयाम् आस मां युधि ॥
अथ घोरं तमस् तीव्रं प्रादुरासीत् समन्ततः ॥
तमसा संवृते लोके घोरेण परुषेण च ॥
तुरगा विमुखाश् चासन् प्रास्खलच् चापि मातलिः ॥
हस्ताद् धिरण्मयश् चास्य प्रतोदः प्रापतद् भुवि ॥
असकृच् चाह मां भीतः क्वासीति भरतर्षभ ॥
मां च भीर् आविशत् तीव्रा तस्मिन् विगतचेतसि ॥
स च मां विगतज्ञानः संत्रस्त इदम् अब्रवीत् ॥
सुराणाम् असुराणां च संग्रामः सुमहान् अभूत् ॥
अमृतार्थे पुरा पार्थ स च दृष्टो मयानघ ॥
शम्बरस्य वधे चापि संग्रामः सुमहान् अभूत् ॥
सारथ्यं देवराजस्य तत्रापि कृतवान् अहम् ॥
तथैव वृत्रस्य वधे संगृहीता हया मया ॥
वैरोचनेर् मया युद्धं दृष्टं चापि सुदारुणम् ॥
एते मया महाघोराः संग्रामाः पर्युपासिताः ॥
न चापि विगतज्ञानो भूतपूर्वो ऽस्मि पाण्डव ॥
पितामहेन संहारः प्रजानां विहितो ध्रुवम् ॥
न हि युद्धम् इदं युक्तम् अन्यत्र जगतः क्षयात् ॥

māṃ ca bhīr āviśat tīvrā tasmin vigatacetasi ||
sa ca māṃ vigatajñānaḥ saṃtrasta idam abravīt ||
surāṇām asurāṇāṃ ca saṃgrāmaḥ sumahān abhūt ||
amṛtārthe purā pārtha sa ca dṛṣṭo mayānagha ||
śambarasya vadhe cāpi saṃgrāmaḥ sumahān abhūt ||
sārathyaṃ devarājasya tatrāpi kṛtavān aham ||
tathaiva vṛtrasya vadhe saṃgṛhītā hayā mayā ||
vairocaner mayā yuddhaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ cāpi sudāruṇam ||
ete mayā mahāghorāḥ saṃgrāmāḥ paryupāsitāḥ ||
na cāpi vigatajñāno bhūtapūrvo 'smi pāṇḍava ||
pitāmahena saṃhāraḥ prajānāṃ vihito dhruvam ||
na hi yuddham idaṃ yuktam anyatra jagataḥ kṣayāt ||
"When that maya was repelled, the danavas, maddened with battle, simultaneously wrought various illusions. There arose a great and terrible rain of weapons -- of fire, wind and stones. That illusory storm pressed upon me in battle, and then on every side arose a thick and terrible darkness. When the world was covered by this harsh gloom, the horses turned away, Matali stumbled, and the golden goad fell from his hand. Again and again he said to me in fear: 'Where are you, best of the Bharatas?' A sharp fear entered me too when he lost consciousness. Coming to himself, still shaken, he said: 'Partha, long ago there was a great battle between the gods and the asuras over the amrita, and I witnessed it, O sinless one. There was also a great battle at the slaying of Shambara; there too I served as the charioteer of the king of the gods. At the slaying of Vritra likewise I held the reins of the horses; I also witnessed the most terrible battle with Vairochani's son. I have lived through these most terrible battles, O Pandava, but never before have I lost consciousness. Surely the Grandfather has ordained the destruction of beings: such a battle is not fitting except at the ruin of the world.'"
