Vyasa said: "Yudhishthira, mighty-armed, best among the upholders of dharma, listen. Son, those who have not undergone austerity do not attain great happiness. A person meets happiness and suffering by turns; no one obtains unending misfortune, bull among men. But the wise person, joined with supreme understanding, knows rise and fall, and therefore neither grieves nor rejoices. Let him enjoy the happiness that comes, let him endure the suffering that comes; let him await the appointed time, as a farmer awaits the harvest. There is nothing higher than austerity; by austerity one obtains greatness. There is nothing unattainable for austerity — understand this, Bharata. Truth, uprightness, freedom from anger, sharing of goods, restraint of the outer and inner senses, freedom from envy, non-violence, purity, and control of the senses — these are the means of men who perform virtuous deeds. Fools who delight in unrighteousness and follow the paths of beasts, having obtained a hard birth, do not find happiness. The deed that is done here is experienced hereafter; therefore the body should be joined to austerity and discipline. According to one's ability one should give, having honored and bowed, at the right time, to a worthy recipient, with a joyful soul and without envy. The truthful obtain long life, the upright freedom from toil, the one free from anger and envy attains supreme peace. The self-controlled one, ever turned toward inner peace, finds no torment; one who has mastered himself does not burn at the sight of another's fortune. He who shares and gives becomes a man of enjoyment and happiness; the non-violent one attains supreme health. One who honors those worthy of honor obtains birth in a great family; one who has conquered the senses is not joined with misfortunes. For a man with a good residue of thought, joined with the law of time, is thereby born with a virtuous mind."

Vyasa's teaching holds karma and patience together. Suffering is not denied, but it is given a direction: austerity, giving, purity, and waiting for the right time.
