The divine messenger said: 'Great seer, your thought is unworthy: having attained the highest heavenly happiness, which ought to be highly prized, you reason like one lacking wisdom. Above lies that world which is called Svar, the upper, eternal path of truth, along which one travels the way of the gods. Those who have not performed austerity, who have not offered great sacrifices, liars, and unbelievers do not go there, Mudgala. There go the righteous souls who have conquered themselves — the peaceful, the self-restrained, the free of envy, men who delight in the dharma of giving, and heroes whose marks are unmarred. Having performed the finest deed, made of tranquility and self-control, they reach the worlds of the righteous, frequented by good men. There are the gods, the Sadhyas, the Vishvadevas, the Maruts together with the great seers, the Yamas, the Dhamas, O descendant of Mudgala, the Gandharvas and Apsarases. Each of these hosts of gods has many separate worlds: radiant, filled with every desire, bright and beautiful. There stands golden Meru, king of mountains, thirty-three thousand yojanas high, and the divine gardens, Mudgala, beginning with holy Nandana, places of delight for men of righteous deeds. There is no hunger there, no thirst, no weariness, no fear of cold or heat, nothing repulsive or unwholesome, no illness whatsoever; pleasant scents are everywhere, pleasant touches everywhere. The sounds there, on every side, are pleasing to ear and mind. There is no grief there and no old age, no toil and no lamentation. Such is that world, sage, arising as the fruit of one's own karma. Men of righteous deeds are born there through their own actions. Those who are born there have bodies of light, formed by karma, O descendant of Mudgala, and not by mother and father. They have no sweat, no foul odor, no excrement or urine; there dust does not soil their garments. Their beautiful garlands, fragrant with divine scent, do not wilt, and they travel on celestial chariots, O brahmin. Those who have won heaven live there in happiness, free from envy, grief, and weariness, without delusion or miserliness. But above such worlds, best of sages, lie the divine worlds of Shakra, endowed with divine qualities. Before Brahma there are radiant and beautiful worlds, to which go the seers purified by their righteous deeds. There are others there, called the Ribhus, gods even to the gods; their worlds are higher still, and the gods themselves offer sacrifice to them. These self-luminous, radiant, supreme worlds grant every desire. They know no anguish caused by women, no envy over dominion of worlds. They do not subsist on oblations, nor do they feed on nectar; their bodies are divine, without gross form. They, the eternal gods of gods, do not seek happiness within happiness, and do not change with the turning of the kalpas. Whence would they have old age or death? They have neither joy nor affection, neither happiness nor suffering; whence, sage, would there be attachment and hatred? This supreme destiny is longed for even by the gods, O descendant of Mudgala; it is a supreme attainment hard to reach, unreachable by those driven by desire. These thirty-three worlds, and the rest of the worlds besides, are reached by the wise through the finest observances or through gifts given according to rule. Here is the prosperity wrought by giving, attained here and bringing happiness. Enjoy it, won by your righteous deeds, shining with the light of austerity. Such is the happiness of heaven, brahmin, such are the various worlds and qualities of heaven. Now learn from me also its flaws.'

The messenger frankly reveals the breadth of heaven's reward: it is vast, radiant, and righteously attained. But Mudgala seeks not merely height, but finality.
