Yudhishthira said: "Let the fires of the brahmin whose fire-sticks the deer carried off not go out. This is my first boon." Dharma answered: "It was I, son of Kunti, who in the form of the deer carried off that brahmin's fire-sticks, in order to test you." He granted this and offered another boon. Yudhishthira said: "Twelve years we have lived in the forest, and now the thirteenth has come. Let no one, wherever we may live, recognize us." Dharma granted this and again reassured the son of Kunti: "Even if you walk the earth in your own forms, no one in the three worlds will recognize you. By my grace you will spend this thirteenth year hidden and unrecognized in the city of Virata. Whatever form each of you conceives in mind, that form you shall all assume at will. Return these fire-sticks to the brahmin: I carried them off in the form of a deer only to test you. Accept a third boon, great and unmatched, my son. You are born of me, O king, and Vidura shares in my portion." Yudhishthira said: "I have beheld the eternal god of gods himself. Since you are pleased and grant a boon, father, I shall accept it: may I always conquer greed, delusion, and anger, and may my mind ever dwell in giving, austerity, and truth." Dharma said: "You are by nature endowed with all virtues, Pandava. You yourself are once again dharma; all will be as you have said."

Even before his divine father, Yudhishthira asks first for the brahmin's sacred fire, then for the protection of their shared duty, and only after that for inner victory over greed and anger.
