अथ मत्स्यो ऽब्रवीद् राजा शतानीकं जघन्यजम् ॥
कङ्कबल्लवगोपाला दामग्रन्थिश् च वीर्यवान् ॥
युध्येयुर् इति मे बुद्धिर् वर्तते नात्र संशयः ॥
एतेषाम् अपि दीयन्तां रथा ध्वजपताकिनः ॥
कवचानि विचित्राणि दृढानि च मृदूनि च ॥
प्रतिमुञ्चन्तु गात्रेषु दीयन्ताम् आयुधानि च ॥
वीराङ्गरूपाः पुरुषा नागराजकरोपमाः ॥
नेमे जातु न युध्येरन्न् इति मे धीयते मतिः ॥
एतच् छ्रुत्वा तु नृपतेर् वाक्यं त्वरितमानसः ॥
शतानीकस् तु पार्थेभ्यो रथान् राजन् समादिशत् ॥
सहदेवाय राज्ञे च भीमाय नकुलाय च ॥
तान् प्रहृष्टास् ततः सूता राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः ॥
निर्दिष्टान् नरदेवेन रथाञ् शीघ्रम् अयोजयन् ॥
कवचानि विचित्राणि दृढानि च मृदूनि च ॥
विराटः प्रादिशद् यानि तेषाम् अक्लिष्टकर्मणाम् ॥
तान्य् आमुच्य शरीरेषु दंशितास् ते परंतपाः ॥
तरस्विनश् छन्नरूपाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥
विराटम् अन्वयुः पश्चात् सहिताः कुरुपुंगवाः ॥
चत्वारो भ्रातरः शूराः पाण्डवाः सत्यविक्रमाः ॥

pratimuñcantu gātreṣu dīyantām āyudhāni ca ||
vīrāṅgarūpāḥ puruṣā nāgarājakaropamāḥ ||
neme jātu na yudhyerann iti me dhīyate matiḥ ||
etac chrutvā tu nṛpater vākyaṃ tvaritamānasaḥ ||
śatānīkas tu pārthebhyo rathān rājan samādiśat ||
sahadevāya rājñe ca bhīmāya nakulāya ca ||
tān prahṛṣṭās tataḥ sūtā rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ ||
nirdiṣṭān naradevena rathāñ śīghram ayojayan ||
kavacāni vicitrāṇi dṛḍhāni ca mṛdūni ca ||
virāṭaḥ prādiśad yāni teṣām akliṣṭakarmaṇām ||
tāny āmucya śarīreṣu daṃśitās te paraṃtapāḥ ||
tarasvinaś channarūpāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ ||
virāṭam anvayuḥ paścāt sahitāḥ kurupuṃgavāḥ ||
catvāro bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ satyavikramāḥ ||
Then the king of the Matsyas said to his younger brother Shatanika: 'Kanka, Ballava, the cowherds, and mighty Damagranthi — I think they can fight, and there is no doubt of it. Give them, too, chariots with pennants and banners, and various kinds of armor, both sturdy and soft; let them put it on their bodies, and let weapons be given to them. These men look like heroes in form, and their arms are like the trunks of lordly elephants. I do not think they have never fought.' Hearing the king's words, Shatanika, his mind hastening, assigned chariots to the sons of Pritha, O king — to Sahadeva the king, to Bhima, and to Nakula. Then the charioteers, joyful and devoted above all to the king, swiftly yoked the chariots assigned by the lord of men. The armor — varied, sturdy and soft — that Virata assigned to these men untiring in their labors, they put on their bodies; armed thus, these destroyers of enemies, all swift, disguised in form, skilled in war, together followed behind Virata — the four valiant Pandava brothers, true in valor, bulls among the Kurus.
