Ashvatthaman said: 'Let the teacher himself forgive; let peace be established here. For when the teacher was reproached, it was done out of anger.' Vaishampayana said: 'Then Duryodhana asked forgiveness of Drona, O Bharata, together with Karna, Bhishma, and the great-souled Kripa. Drona said: "I am satisfied precisely by that first word which Bhishma, son of Shantanu, spoke. Now let the higher course be settled. Just as, depending on Duryodhana's own restraint, the elephant may not touch the soldiers -- whether from rashness or from delusion -- so let policy be arranged accordingly. Had the forest exile not come to its end, Dhananjaya would not have shown himself. But if he has not gained wealth here, he is not bound to bear with us today. Let policy be arranged so that he in no way joins with the sons of Dhritarashtra, and so that he is not defeated. Duryodhana himself spoke such a word before; remembering it, O Gangeya, you should speak accordingly."'

After the flare of anger, the elders steer the conversation back to practical matters. Drona acknowledges a simple truth: if Arjuna has appeared, the period of concealment has likely come to an end.
