अस्याविदूरे तु धनुर् ध्वजाग्रे यस्य दृश्यते ॥
आचार्यस्यैष पुत्रो वै अश्वत्थामा महारथः ॥
सदा ममैष मान्यश् च सर्वशस्त्रभृताम् अपि ॥
एतस्य त्वं रथं प्राप्य निवर्तेथाः पुनः पुनः ॥
य एष तु रथानीके सुवर्णकवचावृतः ॥
सेनाग्र्येण तृतीयेन व्यवहार्येण तिष्ठति ॥
यस्य नागो ध्वजाग्रे वै हेमकेतनसंश्रितः ॥
धृतराष्ट्रात्मजः श्रीमान् एष राजा सुयोधनः ॥
एतस्याभिमुखं वीर रथं पररथारुजः ॥
प्रापयस्वैष तेजोभिप्रमाथी युद्धदुर्मदः ॥
एष द्रोणस्य शिष्याणां शीघ्रास्त्रः प्रथमो मतः ॥
एतस्य दर्शयिष्यामि शीघ्रास्त्रं विपुलं शरैः ॥
नागकक्ष्या तु रुचिरा ध्वजाग्रे यस्य तिष्ठति ॥
एष वैकर्तनः कर्णो विदितः पूर्वम् एव ते ॥
एतस्य रथम् आस्थाय राधेयस्य दुरात्मनः ॥
यत्तो भवेथाः संग्रामे स्पर्धत्य् एष मया सदा ॥

eṣa droṇasya śiṣyāṇāṃ śīghrāstraḥ prathamo mataḥ ||
etasya darśayiṣyāmi śīghrāstraṃ vipulaṃ śaraiḥ ||
nāgakakṣyā tu rucirā dhvajāgre yasya tiṣṭhati ||
eṣa vaikartanaḥ karṇo viditaḥ pūrvam eva te ||
etasya ratham āsthāya rādheyasya durātmanaḥ ||
yatto bhavethāḥ saṃgrāme spardhaty eṣa mayā sadā ||
"Not far from him is the one whose bow is seen at the top of his banner -- the teacher's son, the great chariot-warrior Ashvatthama. He is always honored by me among all who bear weapons. Once you reach his chariot, turn away again and again. And the one who stands amid the chariot ranks clad in golden armor, standing in the third division of the army, on whose banner-top is an elephant on a golden standard -- that is the glorious king Suyodhana, son of Dhritarashtra. Face him, hero, breaker of enemy chariots -- bring the chariot there: he overwhelms with splendor and is maddened by battle. Among Drona's disciples he is held to be the first in swiftness of weapons; I will show him a greater swiftness of weapons with my arrows. And the one on whose banner-top stands a beautiful elephant-girth -- that is Vaikartana Karna, already known to you. Once you stand by the chariot of this evil-souled son of Radha, be alert in battle: he always rivals me."
