स दीव्यमानः प्रतिदेवनेन; अक्षेषु नित्यं सुपराङ्मुखेषु ॥
संरम्भमाणो विजितः प्रसह्य; तत्रापराधः शकुनेर् न कश् चित् ॥
तस्मात् प्रणम्यैव वचो ब्रवीतु; वैचित्रवीर्यं बहुसामयुक्तम् ॥
तथा हि शक्यो धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रः; स्वार्थे नियोक्तुं पुरुषेण तेन ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
एवं ब्रुवत्य् एव मधुप्रवीरे; शिनिप्रवीरः सहसोत्पपात ॥
तच् चापि वाक्यं परिनिन्द्य तस्य; समाददे वाक्यम् इदं समन्युः ॥

tathā hi śakyo dhṛtarāṣṭraputraḥ; svārthe niyoktuṃ puruṣeṇa tena ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
evaṃ bruvaty eva madhupravīre; śinipravīraḥ sahasotpapāta ||
tac cāpi vākyaṃ parinindya tasya; samādade vākyam idaṃ samanyuḥ ||
"And though the dice were constantly turned against him, his opponent was still Shakuni. Contending against Shakuni at play, he suffered a crushing defeat. For this Shakuni is not at all to blame. Let the envoy use words marked by humility, words meant to reconcile the son of Vichitravirya. In this way, the envoy may win the son of Dhritarashtra over to his own views. Do not seek war with the Kurus; approach Duryodhana only in a conciliatory tone. The goal may not be attained through war, but it can be attained through reconciliation, and thus it may be secured for long." Vaishampayana continued: "While this valiant scion of the Madhu line was still speaking, the valiant son of the Shini line suddenly sprang up and, with indignation, censured the former's words, taking up speech with these words of his own."
