अहं चाभिगतः पूर्वं त्वाम् अद्य मधुसूदन ॥
पूर्वं चाभिगतं सन्तो भजन्ते पूर्वसारिणः ॥
त्वं च श्रेष्ठतमो लोके सताम् अद्य जनार्दन ॥
सततं संमतश् चैव सद्वृत्तम् अनुपालय ॥
कृष्ण उवाच
भवान् अभिगतः पूर्वम् अत्र मे नास्ति संशयः ॥
दृष्टस् तु प्रथमं राजन् मया पार्थो धनंजयः ॥
तव पूर्वाभिगमनात् पूर्वं चाप्य् अस्य दर्शनात् ॥
साहाय्यम् उभयोर् एव करिष्यामि सुयोधन ॥
प्रवारणं तु बालानां पूर्वं कार्यम् इति श्रुतिः ॥
तस्मात् प्रवारणं पूर्वम् अर्हः पार्थो धनंजयः ॥
ahaṃ cābhigataḥ pūrvaṃ tvām adya madhusūdana ||
pūrvaṃ cābhigataṃ santo bhajante pūrvasāriṇaḥ ||
tvaṃ ca śreṣṭhatamo loke satām adya janārdana ||
satataṃ saṃmataś caiva sadvṛttam anupālaya ||
kṛṣṇa uvāca
bhavān abhigataḥ pūrvam atra me nāsti saṃśayaḥ ||
dṛṣṭas tu prathamaṃ rājan mayā pārtho dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
tava pūrvābhigamanāt pūrvaṃ cāpy asya darśanāt ||
sāhāyyam ubhayor eva kariṣyāmi suyodhana ||
pravāraṇaṃ tu bālānāṃ pūrvaṃ kāryam iti śrutiḥ ||
tasmāt pravāraṇaṃ pūrvam arhaḥ pārtho dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
Then Duryodhana turned to Krishna with a cheerful face and said: 'You must render me help in the coming war. Arjuna and I are your friends in equal measure. And, O descendant of Madhu, you likewise hold the same relations with both of us. And today, O slayer of Madhu, I have come to you first. Prudent men support the cause of whoever comes to them first. So did the ancients act. And, O Krishna, you stand at the very summit among all discerning men in the world, and you are always held in esteem. I ask you to follow the code of conduct observed by discerning men.' To this Krishna replied: 'That you came first, O king, I do not doubt in the least. But, O king, it was the son of Kunti, Dhananjaya, whom I saw first.'
