Sanjaya said: 'It is exactly as you say, O son of Pandu! Do you ask after the well-being of the Kurus and the best among them? Free from all illness and possessed of excellent spirit are those foremost of the Kauravas about whom you inquire, O son of Pritha. Know, O son of Pandu, that there are without doubt righteous elders among them, and there are also men who are sinful and wicked toward the son of Dhritarashtra. The son of Dhritarashtra would give gifts even to his enemies; therefore it is unlikely that he would take away offerings made to brahmanas. Among you kshatriyas it is customary to follow a rule fit for butchers, which drives you to harm those who bear you no ill will; but Dhritarashtra together with his sons would be guilty of the sin of fomenting discord among kinsmen were he, like a wicked man, to bear such a thing. He does not sanction this affront done to you; he grieves over it deeply; he sorrows within his heart -- an old man -- O Yudhishthira -- for, in conversing with brahmanas, he has learned that sowing discord among kin is the gravest of all sins. They remember your valor on the battlefield, and the valor of Arjuna who led it. They remember Bhimasena, mace in hand, when the sound of kettledrum and conch rose to its height.'
