'O twice-born one, tell me this.' Sanatsujata said: 'Those who, dwelling in the abodes of their teachers and winning their goodwill and friendship, practice the asceticism of Brahmacharya, become, even in this world, embodiments of Brahman, and upon casting off their bodies unite with the Supreme Soul. Those in this world who wish to attain the state of Brahman, who subdue all desires and are endowed with righteousness, succeed in separating the Self from the body. O Bharata, the body is made by father and mother; but the (new) birth that comes through the teacher's instruction is sacred, free from decay, and immortal. One who expounds Brahman and bestows immortality, who envelops all people in the mantle of truth, should be regarded as father and mother; and remembering the good he has done, one should never do him any harm. The disciple should habitually greet his teacher with respect, and with purity of body and mind and focused attention take up his studies. He should regard no service as base and should harbor no anger. With all he possesses — in thought, word, and deed — he should do whatever pleases his teacher.

This passage (5.44.6–10) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace already unfolds against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Key themes: Karna. Here dharma reveals itself through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to one's word, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
