Vidura said: "We have heard from the elders, O sovereign, that once a fowler spread his net upon the ground to catch the winged dwellers of the air. And in that net two birds, who lived together, were caught at the same time. Taking up the net, the two winged creatures flew up together into the air. Then an ascetic dwelling nearby in a hermitage, having finished his morning prayers, saw the fowler running in this way, still hoping to catch the winged creatures. And seeing the dweller of the earth swiftly pursuing the dwellers of the air, the ascetic, O Kaurava, addressed him in this verse: 'O fowler, it seems to me very strange and wondrous that you, who walk upon the earth, should pursue a pair of creatures who dwell in the air.' From the air the fowler replied: 'These two, joined together, are dragging off my net. Yet the moment they quarrel, they will fall under my power.'" Vidura continued: "The two birds, doomed to death, soon afterward fell to quarreling. And when the foolish pair quarreled, they both dropped to the ground. And as, caught in the net of death, they began to struggle fiercely with one another, the fowler came up unnoticed and took the measure of them both.
