Possessed of divinity and a soul surpassing all others, this most exalted of male beings can, by will alone, subdue the earth, the firmament, and the heavens. You have repeatedly asked me, O king, about the Pandavas, because I know their strength and their weakness. Hear now all of this in brief. Were the whole universe set on one scale and Janardana on the other, even then Janardana would outweigh the entire universe. Janardana, at his own discretion, could reduce the universe to ashes, but the whole universe is powerless to reduce Janardana to ashes. Wherever there is truthfulness, wherever there is virtue, wherever there is modesty, wherever there is simplicity, there too is Govinda. And where Krishna is, there success must be. This soul of all beings, the most exalted of male beings, Janardana, governs, as though at play, the whole of earth, firmament, and heaven.

This passage develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of a war that seems inevitable. Dharma here unfolds through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
