"…Yayati, his understanding clouded and his mind seized by astonishment, began to despise all men, gods, and hosts of rishis. Then the god Shakra, destroyer of Bala, perceived his state, and all the royal sages cried, 'Shame, shame!' On beholding the son of Nahusha, a discussion arose: 'Who is he? Whose son, what king's? How did he come to heaven? By what deed did he attain perfection? Where did he amass his austerity? How is he known in heaven, and by whom indeed is he known?' Thus pondering, the heavenly kings, upon seeing King Yayati, began to question one another about him."

Yayati's fall begins not with an outward transgression but with contempt. The moment he starts looking down on men, gods, and rishis, the celestial order ceases to recognize him. The questions of heaven's inhabitants show that true worth is not sustained by past merit alone.
