विररामैवम् उक्त्वा तु विदुरो दीनमानसः ॥

शृण्वन्तु वक्ष्यामि तवापराधं; पापस्य सामात्यपरिच्छदस्य ॥
राज्यं कुरूणाम् अनुपूर्वभोग्यं; क्रमागतो नः कुलधर्म एषः ॥
त्वं पापबुद्धे ऽतिनृशंसकर्मन्; राज्यं कुरूणाम् अनयाद् विहंसि ॥
राज्ये स्थितो धृतराष्ट्रो मनीषी; तस्यानुजो विदुरो दीर्घदर्शी ॥
एताव् अतिक्रम्य कथं नृपत्वं; दुर्योधन प्रार्थयसे ऽद्य मोहात् ॥

śṛṇvantu vakṣyāmi tavāparādhaṃ; pāpasya sāmātyaparicchadasya ||
rājyaṃ kurūṇām anupūrvabhogyaṃ; kramāgato naḥ kuladharma eṣaḥ ||
tvaṃ pāpabuddhe 'tinṛśaṃsakarman; rājyaṃ kurūṇām anayād vihaṃsi ||
rājye sthito dhṛtarāṣṭro manīṣī; tasyānujo viduro dīrghadarśī ||
etāv atikramya kathaṃ nṛpatvaṃ; duryodhana prārthayase 'dya mohāt ||
Having spoken thus, Vidura, his heart heavy, fell silent; then he sank into deep thought and sighed again and again. Then the daughter of King Subala, fearing the destruction of the family, spoke in anger to her son Duryodhana, evil-minded and cruel, in the presence of the kings, words in accord with dharma and true benefit: 'Let the kings who have entered the royal assembly hear, and the brahmarshis and the other members of the council. I shall declare your guilt -- the guilt of a wrongdoer together with his counselors and retinue. The kingdom of the Kurus is to be inherited in due order; such is our family law, handed down by succession. But you, evil-minded one, committing the most cruel deeds, are destroying the kingdom of the Kurus through lawlessness. Wise Dhritarashtra stands at the head of the kingdom, and his younger brother is the far-seeing Vidura. How then, Duryodhana, blinded as you are, do you today seek royal power, passing over these two?'

In this chapter Drona, Vidura, and Gandhari, one after another, bring Duryodhana back to one and the same ground: the authority of the Kurus rests not on personal whim but on the dharma of the family, on lawful succession, and on faithfulness to one's elders. Their words show that denying the Pandavas their rightful share destroys not only the political order but the very fabric of the family.
