यथेच्छकं स्वयंग्राहाद् रथान् अतिरथांस् तथा ॥
कामद्वेषसमायुक्तो मोहात् प्रकुरुते भवान् ॥
दुर्योधन महाबाहो साधु सम्यग् अवेक्ष्यताम् ॥
त्यज्यतां दुष्टभावो ऽयं भीष्मः किल्बिषकृत् तव ॥
भिन्ना हि सेना नृपते दुःसंधेया भवत्य् उत ॥
मौलापि पुरुषव्याघ्र किम् उ नाना समुत्थिता ॥
एषां द्वैधं समुत्पन्नं योधानां युधि भारत ॥
तेजोवधो नः क्रियते प्रत्यक्षेण विशेषतः ॥
रथानां क्व च विज्ञानं क्व च भीष्मो ऽल्पचेतनः ॥
अहम् आवारयिष्यामि पाण्डवानाम् अनीकिनीम् ॥

rathānāṃ kva ca vijñānaṃ kva ca bhīṣmo 'lpacetanaḥ ||
aham āvārayiṣyāmi pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm ||
'You, driven by attachment and hatred, out of delusion arbitrarily designate rathas and atirathas as you please. O mighty-armed Duryodhana, let this be well and properly considered; this evil disposition should be cast aside: Bhishma is doing you wrong. A divided army, O lord, is hard to reunite, even if it is native-born, O tiger among men; what then of an army made up of disparate parts? Among these warriors, O Bharata, a split has arisen in battle; before our very eyes, our fighting spirit is being visibly diminished, above all. What has knowledge of the rathas to do with Bhishma, whose understanding is so small? I myself will halt the battle host of the Pandavas.'

In this chapter the hidden rift within the Kaurava camp becomes visible. Bhishma calls Karna a half-ratha not out of simple dislike: he is pointing to the loss of Karna's natural armor, to the curses laid on him, and to his unreliability at the decisive moment. But Karna hears this as public humiliation and answers even more destructively, calling into question Bhishma's very ability to judge warriors. Thus, on the eve of war, the weakness of Duryodhana's side becomes apparent: an outwardly immense army is already cracking from within, undone by pride, rivalry, and an inability to accept the truth.
