भीष्म उवाच
द्रौपदेया महाराज सर्वे पञ्च महारथाः ॥
वैराटिर् उत्तरश् चैव रथो मम महान् मतः ॥
अभिमन्युर् महाराज रथयूथपयूथपः ॥
समः पार्थेन समरे वासुदेवेन वा भवेत् ॥
लघ्व् अस्त्रश् चित्रयोधी च मनस्वी दृढविक्रमः ॥
संस्मरन् वै परिक्लेशं स्वपितुर् विक्रमिष्यति ॥
सात्यकिर् माधवः शूरो रथयूथपयूथपः ॥
एष वृष्णिप्रवीराणाम् अमर्षी जितसाध्वसः ॥
उत्तमौजास् तथा राजन् रथो मम महान् मतः ॥
युधामन्युश् च विक्रान्तो रथोदारो नरर्षभः ॥

saṃsmaran vai parikleśaṃ svapitur vikramiṣyati ||
sātyakir mādhavaḥ śūro rathayūthapayūthapaḥ ||
eṣa vṛṣṇipravīrāṇām amarṣī jitasādhvasaḥ ||
uttamaujās tathā rājan ratho mama mahān mataḥ ||
yudhāmanyuś ca vikrānto rathodāro nararṣabhaḥ ||
Bhishma said: The sons of Draupadi, O great king, all five of them, are maharathas. Uttara, son of Virata, too, in my judgment, is a great ratha. Abhimanyu, O great king, is a leader of the chariot troops; in battle he may be equal to Partha or to Vasudeva. He is swift with weapons, skilled in varied combat, wise and firm in valor; remembering the suffering of his own father, he will exert his strength. Satyaki, Madhava, a hero and leader of the chariot troops, is one of the foremost heroes of the Vrishnis, intolerant of insult and having conquered fear. Uttamaujas too, O king, in my judgment, is a great ratha; and the valiant Yudhamanyu is a noble ratha, the best of men.

Bhishma shows that the strength of the Pandavas rests on more than the five brothers alone. Around them stand the sons of Draupadi, Abhimanyu, Satyaki, Uttamaujas, and Yudhamanyu, together with their elder allies Virata and Drupada. What matters most in this reckoning is bond and loyalty: kinship, the memory of suffering, and trust become a fighting strength no less than chariots and weapons.
