ते रथैर् मेघसंकाशैर् गजैश् च गजयोधिनः ॥
पृष्ठ्यैश् चाश्वैर् महीपालाः समुत्पेतुर् उदायुधाः ॥
ततस् ते मां महीपालाः सर्व एव विशां पते ॥
रथव्रातेन महता सर्वतः पर्यवारयन् ॥
तान् अहं शरवर्षेण महता प्रत्यवारयम् ॥
सर्वान् नृपांश् चाप्य् अजयं देवराड् इव दानवान् ॥
तेषाम् आपततां चित्रान् ध्वजान् हेमपरिष्कृतान् ॥
एकैकेन हि बाणेन भूमौ पातितवान् अहम् ॥
हयांश् चैषां गजांश् चैव सारथींश् चाप्य् अहं रणे ॥
अपातयं शरैर् दीप्तैः प्रहसन् पुरुषर्षभ ॥

teṣām āpatatāṃ citrān dhvajān hemapariṣkṛtān ||
ekaikena hi bāṇena bhūmau pātitavān aham ||
hayāṃś caiṣāṃ gajāṃś caiva sārathīṃś cāpy ahaṃ raṇe ||
apātayaṃ śarair dīptaiḥ prahasan puruṣarṣabha ||
Then the kings of the earth, warriors mounted on elephants and chariots, with chariots resembling clouds, with elephants and led horses, rushed forth with weapons raised. Then all these guardians of the earth, O lord of the peoples, surrounded me on every side with a vast host of chariots. I repelled them with a great shower of arrows and conquered all the kings, as the king of the gods conquers the Danavas. As they charged at me, I felled with a single arrow, one after another, their variegated banners adorned with gold. Their horses, their elephants, and their charioteers I struck down in battle with blazing arrows, laughing, O best of men.

Bhishma answers Duryodhana not with abstract reasoning but with the story of his own vow and deeds. The account of the svayamvara of the king of Kashi shows his former might: alone, he defeated the assembled kings and carried off the princesses to continue the line of Kuru. Yet this very story leads to Shikhandin and to the boundary Bhishma will not cross: his martial power is subordinate to his vow, not the other way around.
