भीष्म उवाच
ततो ऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ मातरं वीरमातरम् ॥
अभिगम्योपसंगृह्य दाशेयीम् इदम् अब्रुवम् ॥
इमाः काशिपतेः कन्या मया निर्जित्य पार्थिवान् ॥
विचित्रवीर्यस्य कृते वीर्यशुल्का उपार्जिताः ॥
ततो मूर्धन्य् उपाघ्राय पर्यश्रुनयना नृप ॥
आह सत्यवती हृष्टा दिष्ट्या पुत्र जितं त्वया ॥
सत्यवत्यास् त्व् अनुमते विवाहे समुपस्थिते ॥
उवाच वाक्यं सव्रीडा ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः सुता ॥
भीष्म त्वम् असि धर्मज्ञः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः ॥
श्रुत्वा च धर्म्यं वचनं मह्यं कर्तुम् इहार्हसि ॥

tato mūrdhany upāghrāya paryaśrunayanā nṛpa ||
āha satyavatī hṛṣṭā diṣṭyā putra jitaṃ tvayā ||
satyavatyās tv anumate vivāhe samupasthite ||
uvāca vākyaṃ savrīḍā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ sutā ||
bhīṣma tvam asi dharmajñaḥ sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ ||
śrutvā ca dharmyaṃ vacanaṃ mahyaṃ kartum ihārhasi ||
Bhishma said: Then, O best of the Bharatas, I approached my mother, the mother of the hero, and having paid her homage, I said this to Dasheyi: 'These daughters of the lord of Kashi, won by me for Vichitravirya after conquering the kings, have valor as their bride-price.' Then Satyavati, sniffing my head, her eyes brimming with tears, said joyfully: 'By good fortune, my son, you have triumphed.' When, with Satyavati's consent, the wedding drew near, the eldest daughter of the lord of Kashi, overcome with shame, spoke these words: 'Bhishma, you know dharma and are versed in all the shastras. Having heard my righteous words, you must act rightly in this matter.'

Amba does not appeal to Bhishma out of caprice, but on the ground of dharma: her heart already belongs to Shalva, and to keep her in Vichitravirya's house would not be right. The account of Bhishma's strength therefore turns at once into an account of that strength's limit. Victory over kings does not annul a person's own choice and righteous word — and Bhishma must act according to the very dharma he embodies.
