राम उवाच
काशिकन्ये पुनर् ब्रूहि भीष्मस् ते चरणाव् उभौ ॥
शिरसा वन्दनार्हो ऽपि ग्रहीष्यति गिरा मम ॥
अम्बोवाच
जहि भीष्मं रणे राम मम चेद् इच्छसि प्रियम् ॥
प्रतिश्रुतं च यदि तत् सत्यं कर्तुम् इहार्हसि ॥
भीष्म उवाच
तयोः संवदतोर् एवं राजन् रामाम्बयोस् तदा ॥
अकृतव्रणो जामदग्न्यम् इदं वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
शरणागतां महाबाहो कन्यां न त्यक्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
जहि भीष्मं रणे राम गर्जन्तम् असुरं यथा ॥
यदि भीष्मस् त्वयाहूतो रणे राम महामुने ॥
निर्जितो ऽस्मीति वा ब्रूयात् कुर्याद् वा वचनं तव ॥

śaraṇāgatāṃ mahābāho kanyāṃ na tyaktum arhasi ||
jahi bhīṣmaṃ raṇe rāma garjantam asuraṃ yathā ||
yadi bhīṣmas tvayāhūto raṇe rāma mahāmune ||
nirjito 'smīti vā brūyāt kuryād vā vacanaṃ tava ||

अनुवाद

Rama said: 'O daughter of Kashi, say it once more: at my word, Bhishma, though worthy of homage, shall place both your feet upon his head.' Amba said: 'O Rama, if you wish me well, kill Bhishma in battle. And if what you promised is true, you ought to fulfill it here.' Bhishma said: While Rama and Amba were thus conversing, O king, Akritavrana spoke this word to the son of Jamadagni: 'O mighty-armed Rama, you must not forsake the maiden who has come to you for protection. Kill Bhishma in battle, as one would a roaring asura. If Bhishma, challenged by you to combat, O great sage Rama, should say, "I am defeated," or should do your bidding...'
